Insights into using DMSO to treat glaucoma following cataract surgery

Hello fellow warriors in the disinformation war :slightly_smiling_face:. I have been reading about the therapeutic uses of DMSO online, and purchased some to use as eyedrops for my glaucoma. I am 79 years old. My question is this: is it safe to use a 50/50% mix of DMSO and distilled water in eyedrops, as I have had replacement IOCs (intraocular lenses) fitted following cataract surgery. As these lenses are made of plastic, can they be harmed by dilute DMSO? Some sites I have looked at say “No harm from DMSO” and some sites say, “YES, DMSO IS harmful to replacement lenses following cataract surgery.” I’d welcome further advice which might help to settle this question. Thank you in advance, and best wishes to all out there in our growing community. Dee Cope, Cornwall.

Hi @deirdre Here’s a search on DMSO in the forums. Some answers on eye questions. Not exactly the answer you’re looking for, but our forum folks have been active on DMSO lately, so great question and welcome to the forum.

Regarding your concern about dmso and plastics - It probably depends upon the composition of the plastic in your implants.

Here are two webpages that might be useful to you:

https://www.origen.com/wp-content/uploads/WP1411.02-DMSO-Compatibility-with-Medical-Plastics-2023.pdf. This article points out the various compatibilities of different common plastics with DMSO.

https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.iecr.9b00370. This article points out that some copolymers, which are modifications of polyvinylchloride (PVC) are stable in the presence of DMSO.

I suggest that you contact the manufacturer of your medical grade plastic, so you would have a better basis for evaluating the viability of your plastic during your use of DMSO.

Good luck.
