🍔➡️ “Comfortably Collapsing”

After decades of rising waistlines, new numbers show 42 % of U.S. adults now meet the clinical definition of obesity, yet billboards, ads, even kids’ clothing lines keep telling us it’s “normal.”

Dr. Joseph Varon tackled the issue on The National Desk this week, digging into:

  • The hidden costs of treating obesity as just another body type
  • GLP-1 weight-loss injections, game-changer or expensive crutch?
  • Simple metabolic fixes that still out-perform prescriptions long-term

(full clip + our “Comfortable Collapse” article in the first comment).

:speech_balloon: A couple of questions:

When did you first notice the “normalisation” of poor health, fast-food ads, plus-size mannequins, school lunch menus?

Has anyone here tried GLP-1 meds (Ozempic, Wegovy)?, did they work, and what side-effects were the trade-off?

What one realistic habit (protein-heavy breakfast, daily walk, phone-free sleep zone) has helped you to nudge the needle?

The one thing making a difference for me is a ketogenic diet. I should also point out that I was recently diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, which I believe was mostly responsible for weight gain over the past 2 years or so. Synthroid seems to have stabilized TSH, T4, & T3, but the weight didn’t start to come off consistently until getting serious about carbohydrate restriction. I have lost about 27 lbs. over the past 6 months, and my BMI is back within the “healthy” range (for what that’s worth).

Such a shining example of what can be achieved when you take charge of your health @vegandan

I have lost @ 60 pounds (from @ 246 to 181 lbs.) by following the advice that Dr. Paul Marik recommended over a year (or so) ago: Intermittent Fasting combined with Keto (low carbohydrate) diet intake. I have not reached the point that Dr. Marik achieved, where I can totally quit taking my diabetes meds (Jardience & Metformin), due to an occasional carb splurge which demonstrates that I do not have total control of my will power…yet.

Well done @billharkey … I know those carbs are addictive little morsels, so hard to avoid all the time. But great work and keep us posted on your progress. Quick question … Have you ever tried making any keto breads?

You’re bang in the middle of the normal range. I’m in the overweight, but used to be comfortably in the obese category. Helen saw an old photo of us, and burst out laughing that she hadn’t recognized me in the photo. All those delicious pies too many.

I second the well done, a few changes make all the difference. And it’s great to see that a little info from the IMA helped. We love to see that kind of feedback. Thank you.

No, I’ve never tried to make it, but I have purchased the KETO brand bread in grocery stores; however, although the label plainly states “0g SUGAR”, the “Nutrition Facts” breakdown includes Total Carbohydrate content of 9g (with 8g of Dietary Fiber) has me wary since my glucose really shot up after eating a KETO ham sandwich. So now I eat just the ham, warmed in the microwave at home.
